May Alwyn Henderson

May Alwyn Henderson (nee Carvalho), 95, died at Keystone Pointe in LaGrange on Friday July 25, Henderson_May2014. She was born in Monrovia, California on March 30, 1919.

She graduated from Santa Monica High School and Business College. May married Harold D. Henderson on October 18, 1941 at The Wee Kirk O’ the Heather in Glendale, California. They were married for 53 years until Harold’s death in September 1994. Harold and May moved to Elyria in 1948, and later to the LaPorte Grafton area. In their retirement they spent winters in Ruskin, Florida. May lived at The Abbewood in Elyria for four years. May enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, needlework, entertaining, travel, and spending time with her grandchildren and dog friends. In her earlier years she was a Girl Scout Leader, active in PTA, the Mother of Twins Club, and Air Force Mothers. She was a member of The Lorain County Trailblazers Camping Club, and The LaGrange Homemakers. She worked as a bookkeeper for Hess & Hess Pharmacy for 23 years. She had been a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Elyria and The LaPorte United Methodist Church. May was very proud of writing her memoirs for her children at age 80, and learning about the computer in the process. She is survived by her beloved children; daughters, Marjorie M. (Douglas C.) Mulder of Pittsfield Twp., Gayle A. (Lawrence) Beursken of Middleburg, Florida; twin sons, Daniel A. Henderson of Sun City Center, Florida and Douglas S. (Patricia Black) Henderson of Chico, California; and daughter in law, Ellen Nolan Henderson of Delavan, Wisconsin.

She is also survived by her six grandchildren; Dana C. (Christine Zakrajsek) Mulder of Grafton, Eric M. (Melody) Beursken of Orange Park, Florida, W1 US. Army Brian (Lauren) Beursken of Williamsburg, Virginia, Neil Nolan Henderson of Cambridge, Wisconsin, Anna E. Henderson and Camille M. Henderson of Chico, California; and also survived by three great grandchildren; Paityn May and Shane Matthew Beursken and Ever Wren Beursken.

May was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Anthony and Edith Gertrude (nee Braga) Carvalho; her husband; and her brother, Donald A. Carvalho.

Family will receive friends 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57) Elyria (440) 322-4626 where funeral service will be at 10 A.M. Thursday, July 31, 2014. Rev. Chuck Behrens will officiate. Burial will be at LaPorte Cemetery, Butternut Ridge Rd. Grafton.
