Raymond E. West, Jr., 71, of Amherst, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014, at New Life Hospice Residential Center, following a brief illness with cancer. Born April 15, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he came to Lorain with his family as a young child. He attended Lorain High School.
He joined the U.S. Navy and also served in the Navy Reserves. After his time in the service, Ray worked at American Greetings, General Motors and U.S. Steel. In 1967, he began his career with the Lorain Police Department. He worked many years as a patrolman and for the last 10 years, prior to his retirement in 1991, he worked in the Records and Evidence Room. While with the department, he was active for many years with “Operation Open Heart”.
After his retirement, he and his wife, Sharon, lived in New Smyma Beach, Florida, for 15 years, returning to Amherst in 2006.
Ray was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Police, Blue Knights, Amherst Sportsman Club and Buckeye Bounders of Ohio Motor Home Group. He was also a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Chapter FL1-H, where he served as the assistant director and where he and his wife were once also honored as “Couple of the Year”.
He enjoyed woodworking, creating and making PVC Tropical birds, which he sold for many years at craft shows.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon (nee Klein); his daughters, Kathleen “Micki” McNamara of Brunswick and Diane “DeDe” (Todd) Griffith of Amherst; his grandchildren, John M. (Jaimee) McNamara of Bowling Green, Brittany McNamara of Cleveland, and Adam Griffith of Amherst; his great-grandchildren, Ella and Liam McNamara of Bowling Green; his sisters, Lois Nau and Pattie Coley, both of Lorain; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond, Sr. and Cora (nee Graham); and his brother, Leland West.
The family will receive friends at a memorial gathering on Sunday, August 3, 2014, from 1 until 4 P.M.,. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst.
