Claudia A. Kalis

Claudia A. Kalis (nee Crowell, fka Batista), of Lorain, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at the Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio, following a determined struggle against cancer. Mrs. Kalis was born September 23, 1938, to the late George and Virginia Crowell of Lakewood.

Mrs. Kalis was a 1956 graduate of Lakewood High School and attended Kent State University, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. She later earned a degree in communications from Cleveland State University. Mrs. Kalis arrived in Lorain in 1962 by way of Memphis, Tennessee, and Buffalo, New York, and lived here for the remainder of her life. She was active in the community as a synchronized swimming coach at the YMCA, a booster of Lorain Catholic High School, where her three children attended school and played sports, a volunteer tutor in adult literacy programs, a volunteer at the Mercy Cancer Center in Lorain, and in various capacities in the parishes of St. Stanislaus and St. Frances Cabrini.

Mrs. Kalis was an avid reader, golfer, skier and roller blader who loved to travel – interests that she passed to her children and grandchildren. She was also a member of a bridge group and Red Hat Club with her close friends for many years. Throughout her working career, she was at various times a legal assistant, librarian, insurance agent, and Weight Watcher’s associate, performing each job with her characteristic dedication and passion. Most importantly, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Mrs. Kalis is survived by her three children, Cheryl and Jim Beninga of Meadow Vista, California, Claire Batista and Betsy Kenniston of Sylvania, Ohio, and Bruce and Melissa Batista of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; her six grandchildren, Luke Beninga, Patrick Beninga, Benjamin Batista, Andrew Batista, Ryan Batista and Lauren Batista; step-daughters, Paula Sanner and Nicole Wagner; step-grandchildren, Anthony Sofia, Christopher Sofia, Camryn Wagner, Courtney Kushinski and Scott Sanner; and step-great-grandchildren, Jacob, Justin and Olivia Kushinski.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Kalis; her parents, George and Virginia Crowell; and her brothers, Lawrence Crowell and John Crowell.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 2143 Homewood Dr. in Lorain, Thursday, August 14, 2014, at 11 A.M., with a reception immediately following the service at the St. Frances Cabrini parish hall, with internment at Calvary Cemetery, 555 North Ridge Road West, in Lorain.
