Kenneth E. Spiegelberg, 88, of Lorain, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at Rae Ann Suburban in Westlake. A lifetime resident of Elyria Township, Kenneth was raised and lived on his family’s farm. He was born May 24, 1926 in Lorain.
As a young boy, Ken worked on the family’s farm transitioning from his fathers right hand man to owner and operator along with his wife Ruth. Over time they shifted from general farming to fruit growers, becoming one of the largest fruit suppliers in the state. Ken and Ruth invested a lifetime together on the farm enjoying a common labor as not only husband and wife but partners.
He was a former member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Lorain where he served as a trustee. Ken was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Elyria. He was a member and a past president for Ohio Horticultural Association, now known as the Ohio Fruit Growers, where he was a member and board member; a member of the Ohio Farm Market as well as a member and board member of the Lorain County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Emily Spiegelberg on April 13, 2014; his brother, Dale William Spiegelberg on December 28, 2008; and his parents, Earl William and Eva Katherine Spiegelberg (nee Fullmer).
Friends may call Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 10 A.M. in the funeral home. The Reverend Dr. Arnie Fleagle, Pastor of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Amherst, will officiate. Burial will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
