Betty Jean Smith, 83, of Elyria, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 7, 2014, in the University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, of Elyria, following a long illness. She was born in Cowan, Tennessee, coming to Elyria 65 years ago.
Mrs. Smith was employed as a Nurse’s Aide for Elyria Memorial Hospital, retiring after 19 years of service and also worked for the Welcome Nursing Home of Oberlin and also a private Health Care duties and volunteer at the senior center of Oberlin. A member of True Vine Primitive Baptist Church, where she served as Mother of the Church, she also enjoyed fishing, cooking, helping others, and spending time with her grandchildren and family and friends.
Mrs. Smith will be sadly missed by her daughter, Novella Denise Brown of Elyria; sons, James L. (Elizabeth) Brown, Dwight A. (Kim) Brown, Ronald A. (Joanne) Brown, Marvin L. (Loretta) Brown, all of Elyria and Terry (Roselane) Brown of Lorain; her mother, Christina Brannon of Elyria; a special granddaughter and care giver, Tonya Brown of Elyria; 20 grandchildern; 21 great-grandchildren; and 39 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Plummer and biological mother, Edith Taylor; first husband, Horrom Brown; second husband, Earl J. Smith, Jr.; sisters, Elise Bryant and Louisa Brooks and brother Glen Taylor.
Friends may call Wednesday, August 13, 2014, from 10 A.M., until time of services at 11 A.M., in True Vine Primitive Baptist Church, 737 18th St. Elyria Pastor, James R. Furcron, will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Avon.
