UPDATED: Metro Parks Ranger injured in Monday crash

CARLISLE TWP. — Lorain County Metro Parks Ranger Sander Sanchez sustained minor injuries about 4:05 p.m. Monday when deputies said a car pulled out in front of him at the intersection of Oberlin-Elyria and Russia roads.

“It was just a failure-to-yield incident,” said Deputy Dan Strohsack of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, who investigated the crash. “It could’ve been a lot worse.”

Sanchez was westbound on Oberlin-Elyria Road headed to Forest Hills Golf Course when the crash occurred, according to Metro Parks Capt. Mike Goodrich. Sanchez suffered head and left arm injuries and was taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for evaluation.

Goodrich said Sanchez was in good spirits.

“He’s tough guy,” Goodrich said.

The driver of the other car, Eugene Pigatti, and his passenger, were uninjured and wouldn’t comment. The eastbound car, a Mercedes Benz C300 4matic, had a smashed driver’s side door, and the car’s air bag deployed.

Pigatti, 55, of Bethel Park, Pa., wasn’t charged Monday. However, Strohsack said Pigatti may be charged with failure to yield later this week.

A few neighbors said the intersection, which has a stop sign at Russia Road, needs to have a red light. Strohsack said speed wasn’t a factor in Monday’s crash, but residents said some drivers speed on Oberlin-Elyria Road and drivers sometimes pull out in front of them from Russia Road.

Mary Leach said she’s witnessed a few near misses since she moved into her home at 903 Oberlin-Elyria Road in 2011.

“This is major accident waiting to happen,” Leach said.
