Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback Monday night against Washington, Browns coach Mike Pettine announced this afternoon.
Rookie Johnny Manziel will come off the bench for the second straight preseason game, but this time he’ll receive repetitions with the first-team offense.
“It’s just something right now where we are comfortable with Brian going out there to start the game,” Pettine said in a news release. “I think it’s a little overblown as to who the starter is going to be. The key component, as I’ve stated earlier this week, is that we are going to balance the reps.
“We will play it a little by ear as it goes on, we haven’t truly decided as far as the rotation but the goal is, for when we look at the stat sheet at halftime, that they both have the same amount of repetitions and hopefully they both get a good amount of work.”
Hoyer started the preseason opener Saturday against the Lions, took all the snaps with the starters and led two field-goal drives. He went 6-for-14 for 92 yards and a 65.2 rating.
Manziel played with the second-team offense and led a field-goal drive. He went 7-for-11 for 63 yards and a 79.0 rating. He rushed six times for a team-high 27 yards.
Pettine plans to name the starter for Week 1 against Pittsburgh next week before the third preseason game.
