Avon Lake mayor says Giant Eagle not moving to Avon

AVON LAKE — Ongoing development along Nagel Road in Avon has activated the rumor mill in Avon’s neighbor to the north.

Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka said talk is circulating around the city that Giant Eagle, 31990 Walker Road, intends to close its doors and head south to property along Nagel Road in the fast-developing area around the Interstate 90 interchange.

Zilka told City Council that won’t happen.

Zilka said a Giant Eagle real estate development representative confirmed there is no intention of opening a Giant Eagle in Avon or of closing one in Avon Lake.

Rumors might have started because Giant Eagle has access to property on Nagel near the interchange, Zilka said.

“It is for a Get-Go (gasoline) station,” Zilka said.

There already is a Get-Go in Avon at 1501 Travelers Point near the intersection of Chester and Center roads. According to Avon Planning Coordinator Jim Piazza, several years ago Giant Eagle did express an interest in leaving Avon Lake after the interchange opened, but corporate officials changed their minds.

Piazza said Jacobs Real Estate Services, which handles the development angle of that area, wants a gas station near Just Imagine Drive, but nothing has been nailed down.

“We have not been contacted by any gas stations,” Piazza said. “But that’s a perfect location for one.”

James Eppele, executive vice president for Jacobs Real Estate Services, said he did not have any information regarding the potential for a gas station in the area.
