BEIRUT (AP) — An Internet video posted online Tuesday purported to show the beheading by the Islamic State group of U.S. journalist Steven Sotloff, who went missing in Syria last year.

The extremist group, which has claimed wide swaths of territory across Syria and Iraq and declared itself a caliphate, said Sotloff’s killing was retribution for continued U.S. airstrikes targeting its fighters in Iraq. It brazenly killed American journalist James Foley last month in the same manner and again threatened to kill another hostage, this one they identified as a British citizen.

Sotloff, 31, who freelanced for Time and Foreign Policy magazines, had last been seen in Syrian in August 2013 until he appeared in a video released online last month by the Islamic State group that showed the beheading of Foley.

Dressed in an orange jumpsuit against the backdrop of an arid Syrian landscape, Sotloff was threatened in that video with death unless the U.S. stopped airstrikes on the group in Iraq.

In the video distributed Tuesday and entitled “A Second Message to America,” Sotloff appears in a similar jumpsuit before he was purportedly beheaded by an Islamic State fighter.

The Associated Press could not immediately verify the video’s authenticity. The SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S. terrorism watchdog, first reported about the video’s existence. Unlike Foley’s beheading, which was widely shared on Twitter accounts affiliated with the Islamic State group, the video purporting to show Sotloff’s killing was not immediately posted online, though several jihadi websites told users to expect it Tuesday.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said U.S. intelligence analysis will “work as quickly as possible” to determine if the video of the beheading is authentic.

“If the video is genuine, we are sickened by this brutal act, taking the life of another innocent American citizen,” Psaki said. “Our hearts go out to the Sotloff family and we will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Psaki said it’s believed that “a few” Americans are believed to still be held by the Islamic State but would not give any specifics.

The fighter who beheads Sotloff in the video called it retribution for Obama’s continued airstrikes against the group in Iraq.

“I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State … despite our serious warnings,” the fighter said. “So just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people.”

At the end of the video, he threatened to kill a third captive, a Briton, David Cawthorne Haines. It was not immediately clear who Haines was. Officials with the British Foreign Office declined to immediately comment.

Sotloff’s mother had pleaded for his release last week in a video directed at the Islamic State group.

Addressing the leader of the Islamic State group by name, Shirley Sotloff said in a video her son was “an innocent journalist” who shouldn’t pay for U.S. government actions in the Middle East over which he has no control.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said he wasn’t immediately aware of the purported Sotloff video and wasn’t in a position to confirm its authenticity.

“This is something that the administration has obviously been watching very carefully,” Earnest said. “Our thoughts and prayers first and foremost are with Mr. Sotloff and Mr. Sotloff’s family and those who worked with him.”

A man who answered a phone listed in the name of Sotloff’s sister hung up when called by the AP.

The Islamic State group which has taken over a third of Syria and Iraq has terrorized rivals and civilians alike with widely publicized brutality as it seeks to expand a proto-state it has carved out on both sides of the border.

In its rise to prominence over the past year, the extremist group has frequently published graphic photos and gruesome videos of everything from bombings and beheadings to mass killings.

And President Obama still has “no strategy yet”….despite being briefed daily on the activities of ISIS for over a year.

Americans are losing their heads, while Obama seems more concerned about losing a head cover on the golf course.

The U.S. is the biggest, baddest country in the world….time to start acting like it again.

Where is Reagan when you need him?

    • B4CE

If only we hadn’t unnecessarily taken out the crazy Iraqi dictator that kept all these crazy groups in check. Oh well too late for that. I’m sure McCain will be on Sundays talk shows yapping about who we should supply arms to this week. Reminds me of when Reagan supplied arms to Bin Laden. What could go wrong?

      • guest

They couldn’t pay me enough money to go there to get a story.

      • HankKwah

Right. He kept them in check, yet gassed entire villages at a whim. That’s a good guy to keep around.

Don’t forget about obama’s “Fast and Furious” and how that backfired. That went well, didn’t it? Oh, wait, it didn’t: Two of the missing weapons linked to the operation turned up at the Arizona murder scene of United States Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

        Ooops.

        • B4CE

I missed the part where fast and furious lead to Middle East destabilization.

          • HankKwah

Didn’t say it did. You wanted to bring up things that backfired on Bush and Reagan. I thought I’d contribute one of obama’s many screw-ups. Notice I didn’t mention Libya, Syria, Egypt….ooops. Again.

          • B4CE

I don’t have the revisionist memory of Obama that you Cons have of Repub Presidents. I know he hasn’t been perfect.
Every one if the things you mention, the Con talking heads were in Sunday morning tv trying to give credit to Bush for enabling the democratic process in the Middle East by taking out Saddam Hussein . Now you are blaming Obama? You guys talk yourselves in circles to cover up your policies that are wrecking havoc on America and beyond.
Admit it, as shifty as he was, Saddam was better for the world and the Middle East than what the vacuum in power caused by an unnecessary war.

          • Bill Love

yeah a man who murder and raped millions of people was better for the middle east. do you even read what you are typing ?

          • Sis Delish

B4CE. Is your selective memory failing you?

Your Pal Saddam rumbled across the desert in the early 90′s to do what?

If Saddam and his Sons were still around, would you allow any females in your immediate circle of friends or, if you have family, to travel to Bagdad?

As far as your comment about “unnecessary war”, isn’t that what you accuse folks in America of? War on Women, War on Children, War on this, War on That. You lefties are War Mongerers, since it’s your side that brings the phrases into being.

          • whobeboo

Sis, now that Saddam and his Sons are gone, would you allow any females in your immediate circle of friends or, if you have family, to travel to Bagdad?

          • Sis Delish

Your President just made a statement which probably supports his predecessor’s action in the Middle East. Seems HE finally gets it, how long will it take You?

          • HankKwah

“Saddam was better for the world”….

LMAO Coming from the pro-abortion, anti-death penalty party person you are, that does not surprise me in the least. Anything to excuse the situation obama created. Nice goose-steppin’ there. Congrats.

          • B4CE

“The situation Obama created? “You mean Isis ? The group that McCain was recently urging ‘Merica to fund and arm ? Or were you referring to the fact that Bush created the power Vacum that allowed this group to flourish? OR are you did you mean Obama abiding by the date Bush set and the Iraqis agreed to for ‘Mericas troop withdrawal ??
Ha! Actually gave me a chuckle. That being said, there are other real news organizations than Faux News. You should try watching them occasionally !

          • HankKwah

Nice talking-points. I’m so glad you can think for yourself. LOL

          • HankKwah

On Thursday’s The Kelly File, Megyn Kelly aired what she termed a “frighteningly accurate” 2007 prediction by President Bush about Iraq, if U.S forces were withdrawn before “our commanders tell us we are ready”:

“[It] would mean surrendering the future of Iraq to al Qaeda. It would mean that we’d be risking mass killings on a horrific scale.

It would mean we’d allow the terrorists to establish a safe haven in Iraq to replace the one they lost in Afghanistan.

It would mean increasing the probability that American troops would have to return at some later date to confront an enemy that is even more dangerous.”

Of course, as history will record, President Obama did just that in 2011; he ordered a complete withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq – against the advice of his military commanders.

Oh well, sorry to destroy your rant.

          • B4CE

At least he was right on one thing about the Iraq war. Are you saying President Bush knew this was going to happen in 2007, yet signed a reduction in force agreement in 2008 anyway? Essentially ensuring his prophecy came to fruition ? Why would he do that? And why would you openly brag about it, backing up my point?

          • HankKwah

They set a date for withdrawal, contingent on both the Iraqi government and the US, based on the advice of the military commanders. obama went against that. You’re pretty slow, aren’t you?

          • B4CE

You’re telling me that Bush knew that his war of choice would create a power void that the terrorist would use to their advantage, before he signed an agreement that set a hard date for total troop removal?
            Who are you calling slow?
The fact that you continue to try to justify this horrific lack of foresight and judgement is just sad.

          • HankKwah

I’m calling you slow. You rank right up there with that jacka$$ of a president that you voted for and continue to defend. It’s no wonder with folks like you voting for folks like him that this country is on a downhill spiral.

      • golfingirl

There you go again….”if only this, if only that.”

In your eyes, Obama can do no wrong, because some former president did something just as bad.

Get over the past. Live in the present.

Isis presents a real danger to America and must be dealt with…..but wait, we have no strategy.

If children can walk into this country through the southern border, do you really think we can stop the immigration of those who have sworn to kill Americans?

Bush is gone, Reagan is gone….Obama is here….and he needs to stand up and stop this threat now. It can no longer be ignored.

No action is not an acceptable option at this point.

        • B4CE

“Where’s Reagan when you need him?”- Golfin gurl
Take your own advise, Quit living in the past. Particularly when past republican Presidential policy decisions have directly lead to this present crisis.

          • Bill Love

How? if you want go there how about Clinton not taking bin laden serious. our how about Clinton blowing up a factory with kids in it in Iraq. O that’s right Clinton cant do no wrong either

          • B4CE

Can’t do NO wrong ? I’ll agree with your double negative!

          • Bill Love

so all you can do is corrected my grammar

          • SniperFire

Actually, he has you talking about anything other than Owebama’s pathetic failure, which was his intent.

          • B4CE

No, I can also point out how wrong you and the rest of you Cons have been on foreign policy.
Here is two small examples for you to maul over.
” we will be greeted as liberators” & ” mission accomplished”!

          • It has to stop

Kind of hard to take anything you say seriously when you say,

“Saddam was better for the world and the Middle East”

      • TrickleDownDoesn’t

I think what B4CEF is getting at is we need to stop policing the world.
For every enemy we fight, we can count on 2 more resulting from it. If
people thought one enemy in Al Qaeda was bad resulting 9/11, how about
Homeland Security having to watch terrorist threats from multiple
        fronts.
Break the war machine, and use the money to help Americans!

        • SniperFire

          LOL. Freeloader wants more.

          • TrickleDownDoesn’t

Trying to get Americans real jobs at real pay scales is not freeloading.

          • SniperFire

            Sure it is, freeloader.

        • B4CE

Actually I was pointing out that 40 yrs of failed Con policy has culminated in a disaster they now try to pin on our current President.
But you put it in a much nicer way. And yet still the sniper takes pot shots at you. They have a hard time accepting anything other than what faux news tells the to believe.

          • TrickleDownDoesn’t

Yes, B4CE – Faux News is a big part of promoting the war machine, and the scare machine. I’m sure SniperFire still wants Social Security…freeloader. I’m making more than 6-figures, and expect to pay my fair share for the services and infrastructure that helped me get there. I am by far and anything but a freeloader, SniperIgnorant.

          • Bill Love

I don’t watch any news channels I read articles and make judgment for myself all news channels have a agenda weather it be fore the left or right its one of the issues with are country. no true journalism any more they are all about rating and will say anything to get them weather there true or not

          • B4CE

Wether or not the weather is true or not, it’s not good for ” ARE” country. Ironic you are complaining about journalism .

          • Bill Love

sorry about the grammar im typing frm my phone I hate auto correct. even you have to admit all news channels have a agenda its not about the facts anymore its about ratings and which political party they side with

          • B4CE

I feel ya on the phone and auto correct. But it is a handy little tool

          • HankKwah

And 6 years of obama has completely undone everything that we’d accomplished over there. So 6 years of a stupid, pompous, irresponsible jackass liberal president has unraveled Middle East policy.

            You must be proud.

          • B4CE

Everything “we” accomplished? (Thank you for serving our armed forces, what branch?”. You and President Bush have already said that the biggest thing he accomplished was creating a safe haven for terrorist once the troops reduction date that he set was reached. If there is any accomplishment I’m missing, please fill me in.
You’ve got to turn Faux News off, it’s turning your brain to mush. Megen Kelly is nice to look at, but obviously hazardous to your ability to think for yourself.

          • HankKwah

LMAO That’s the best you could do was “Faux News”? No wonder everyone here considers you a troll. Come back when you’ve been weaned from the koolaid, and you’ve removed your head from your posterior. Maybe people will take you a little more serious then. Given your history, I doubt it but, you know, miracles happen.

          • B4CE

Kool Aid? That’s the best you could do?
Judging by the amount of time you spend replying to me, and the number of names you hurl towards me, I’d say you take me pretty seriously. After all, I think for myself, not how a foreign owned media company wants me to and you don’t know how to handle that. So yell louder and type lots of put downs..
But seriously, thank you for your military service. It lends some credibility to you war hawks when you actually put your money where your mouth is! What branch did you serve in?

          • HankKwah

I spend as little time on you as I can, because the truth and facts are wasted on you, and you deny responsibility for any and everything concerning your party.

          • B4CE

You must have a lot of free time then, look at all these replies to a troll. Are you retired military? Thank you again for your service! I like when patriots that understand what our military members go through weigh the options before calling for yet another military mission.
I’ll take responsibility for the party I vote for. Ended the war on Bush’s time schedule , killed Saddam ( as Bush said,”wanted dead or alive”), kept GM alive, administered over the recovery after the economic depression Bush left, finally got universal health care to the people, soaring record high stock market.
Sure beats having to defend a terror attack on our soil, a bank bail out, an economic depression, an unnecessary war.
I understand if you don’t want to respond to a troll, particularly when you’re clearing fighting a losing battle.
            Thank you for serving!

          • HankKwah

Here’s a little something to think about concerning your reference to “Faux News”: Since day one of Benghazi, Fox News has aggressively investigated. It hasn’t been easy. It’s more like pulling teeth trying to get answers from the Obama administration…Remember the days right after the attack, the State Department had a conference call to brief all in the media and excluded Fox News? When confronted, State Department apologized and said it was oversight. Really? An oversight? Well, it happened again a short time later. This time the CIA giving a media briefing and guess who was specifically excluded? You got it. Fox News. – See more at: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeffrey-meyer/2014/09/08/foxs-greta-slams-obama-admin-over-benghazi-acting-they-are-hiding#sthash.M4R2cUXH.dpuf

When reporter Jennifer Griffin said she was told that there was a stand down order at Benghazi, I got a weird call from the Obama administration trying to pressure me to get Jennifer to back down on her report. I thought the call from the Obama administration was dirty. – See more at: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeffrey-meyer/2014/09/08/foxs-greta-slams-obama-admin-over-benghazi-acting-they-are-hiding#sthash.M4R2cUXH.dpuf

The Fox host concluded her “Off the Record” commentary by hitting the White House one final time for its repeated refusal to turn over all pertinent information on Benghazi:

As recently as April after the administration said it turned over all the information an email surfaces that had been withheld in the face of repeated requests. Are you suspicious? I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t born yesterday.

This is what happens to a news source that ISN’T a lapdog for obama and the administration. Think about that. If you’re able.

          • B4CE

Are you saying the Republican lead investigative committee that finally said, there was no wrong doing by the administration is an Obama lap dog? How come the REPuBLICAN lead committee agreed with the administration and not Faux News?
Still waiting for your list of Middle East Accomplishments you and your fellow soldiers accomplished during the Bush administration?

          • B4CE

Tell you what, just tell me
            1) the things “we” accomplished in the Middle East
            2) what branch you served in
            3) and why the Republican lead committee investigating found NO wrong doing by the administration in Benghazi
Then I swear to you , you’ll never have to defend the miserable record of republicans to me ever again.

          • HankKwah

Responding to your comment would be akin to admitting the Republicans have a “miserable” record, which only libs that stand by obama believe. And you’d believe ANYTHING to avoid responsibility for electing and standing by obama.

And when I say “we accomplished”, I mean we as a Country and all of those that support our military, which I support unceasingly, with family and friends being active duty members.

          • B4CE

Ok let me rephrase the questions,
Please respond and you will never have to respond to me again.
            1) why did the Republican lead committee find NO wrong doing by the administration in the Benghazi attack?
            2) what branch did YOU serve in
            And most IMPORTANTLY ,
            3) a list of the accomplishments “WE” made
No trick questions, no admitting to anything that may be misleading.
Do this and you’ll never have to respond to me again.

          • B4CE

Come on my man. All I asked for was a list of Middle East accomplishments made by America.
And why would a Republican lead committee find no wrong doing by the Obama administration concerning Benghazi, if there really was?
Surely there is no possible way those two questions can be misconstrued as entrapment. Be honest, that’s all I’m asking. No name calling, just honest answers

          • B4CE

By not responding to my questions, but posting about older drivers, you have admitted republican policy on the Middle East has been detrimental to society as a whole.
Please just list the accomplishments “we” made in the Middle East
And why the Republicans on the Benghazi committee didn’t find President Obama guilty of any wrong doing?
I’ll leave you alone if answered honestly and truthfully. No tricks, no set ups.

        • Scout

Sure put your head in the sand…part of the reason this is happening is because they took their eyes off the world stage…honestly, what happens over there ultimately affects all of us in a very serious way.

    • TrickleDownDoesn’t

Funny how you bash Obama for golfing considering your tag name…if that were true, you must accomplish nothing…and none of the other presidents ever golfed.

      • Scout

No problem with vacationing….it’s the publicity that he let get out about it….like Nero fiddling while Rome burned ya know…you don’t let them report adnauseum about your golf game while heads are rolling.

        • TrickleDownDoesn’t

Or like when Bush golfed while 3,000 troops died, and tens of thousands more suffer(ed) from PTSD for what a majority of Americans agree were wars initiated after making very poor choices, and without the support of the rest of the world.

          • Bill Love

It was stupid when they said it about bush and its stupid to say it about Obama he can take a vacation and still do his job that we both agree on that

  • bpbatista

A former Pentagon official confirms to Fox News that
detailed and specific intelligence about the rise of ISIS was included
in the PDB, or the President’s Daily Brief, for at least a year
before the group took large swaths of territory beginning in June.

The official, who asked not to be identified because the PDB is
considered the most authoritative, classified intelligence community
product providing the President with analysis of sensitive international
events, said the data was strong, and “granular” in detail, adding a
policy maker “…could not come away with any other impression: This is
    getting bad.”

The official who has close knowledge of the process said the
President, who reads the PDB unlike his predecessors who traditionally
had the document briefed to them, was not known to come back to the
intelligence community with further questions or “taskings.” Asked to
describe the frequency, the former Pentagon official said “not
    generally.”

After suggestions that the administration may have been blindsided by
the rise of ISIS, and that poor intelligence was to blame, the former
Pentagon official said some of the intelligence was so good it was
described as “exquisite” when the President drew a red line on chemical
weapons use in Syria in 2012.

Contrary to recent comments, the Pentagon official says that Obama
was offered strategic opportunities to attack ISIS targets on a broad
scale, but that Obama didn’t respond to them:

The source who is familiar with the deliberations said
“(we) were ready to fire, on a moments notice, on a couple hundred
targets,” but no order was given. In some cases, targets were tracked
for a “long period of time” but then slipped away.

Stan, so I and perhaps others can appreciate just where the F you are coming from, we’re/are you more offended by this Second beheading, OR, by the Mike Brown/Ferguson, MO death?

      • golfingirl

The real “armchair quarterback” here is the president. He has known about this for years, but choose to just sit back and not act.

This group wants to destroy all infidels, which Obama and his intelligence team has known about for years. But he has done nothing to stop them. Nothing!

Obama was the only one who could have been a real quarterback and he let his team down, the American citizens. He underestimated his competition, and never read the playbook.

Do you really think they are not a threat to this country?

        • Joe Smith

“Obama was the only one who could have been a real quarterback and he let his team down, the American citizens.”
Since when was he on America’s side?

          • Scout

            OH bravo! joe smith….exactly!

  • onesears

Do you really want to start World War 3 with a full on attack of the middle east? You must remember, there are over 1 billion Muslims in the world, and most of them are in China. Pissing off Syria ans Iraq would be the least of your problems, as China has nuclear weapons, and their best friend, Russia does too. So what can the President do? Nothing on a major scale without Congress, and if you remember they only have 132 scheduled work days this year…

    • guest

      I agree.

    • SpaceTech

ISIS claims they are operating in Gaza, if so and they attack Israel that alone could start the next great war. China/Russia aren’t going to involve themselves in a religious based war so don’t worry about nukes! And there are only 10 million muslim’s in China.

    • Scout

There are a lot of nuclear weapons that are in the middle east and they are not held by people who LIKE us… since the president has been getting briefings on this particular group for a year or so and considers they are ‘jv’ then he isn’t going to congress except to cover his butt.

  • SniperFire

I guess Owebama wasn’t kidding when he vowed to side with his Muslim bros.

  • Sis Delish

Censorship is back when you post about black at The C-T.

  • Stan K

Who really cares! what the hell are these people doing in these unstable countries anyways.Quit blaming Obama,we have no business in these countries, especially when they flat out tell us to stay the fluck out.We burned over 10 trillion dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan chasing the boogieman. If you go to the middle east and you get caught, then its your own damn fault.

    • Sis Delish

Objective #1: Keep those nasty folks There, not Here.

    • golfingirl

      “Who really cares?”

I care, and all Americans should as well. Two fellow Americans have been beheaded by a group which has as its ultimate goal the eradication of the United Staes of American, including my children.

      But you don’t care!

That statement tells us all exactly what kind of person you really are.

    • SniperFire

The end of Pax Americana – or, Obama curling up in a fetal position and permitting the little borat nations to run wild and Putin / China to flex their muscle – is something only the most naive persons would pass off with a ‘who cares.’

  • givemeabreak1234

they are nothing but cowards ( sons of b!tches) Take off ur f@cking mask u cowards

  • Scout

OH my, reading these posts from people who realy don’t care what goes on ourside of the u.s. border really scares me….. apparently education has been seriously lacking and now they want to throw in common core. So many mistakes have been repeated over the years and we are still repeating them, regardless that Valerie Jarrett said that Obama is so smart that this stuff bores him. HA!

  • TheRustyScupper

People who kill/slaughter innocents should be arrested and murdered. However, no mention of the person who sends-in drones that end up killing innocents, since they are called “collateral damage”. What’s good for the goose . . . .

  • The Great One

These terrorists need to be exterminated, once and for all. ISIS does this to scare Americans and to recruit other members to their sick organization. They have stated that their flag will fly over our White House; they are at war with us and it is time that we go to war with them. Time to make our enemies fear the U.S. and time to quit fighting wars with our hands tied behind our backs. Maybe it is time for the U.S. to drop atomic bombs 3,4,5,……etc until the rest of the world finally gets the point. Right now, we have the best, most lethal, far reaching military capability in the world…..time to take advantage of that.

  • bigmacky

I am hesitate to say this but – we have the best of the best in military and intelligence -maybe Israel’s Mossad is a tad better – why not just say the heck with it and do a seek and destroy? the world will not like it at first but when these senseless and COWARDLY deeds stop – will the world sigh a breath of relief? I think so – of course nature abhors a vacuum so I am sure another group will replace them – can you say wash rinse repeat?

    • The Great One

Exactly. Time to put the fear in them; how about the U.S. gets down and dirty like ISIS does and start using their tactics…..no regard for anyone who stands in our way. I guarantee you that if ISIS had military power like the U.S., all of us posting on this post would be dead already. I’m tired of the U.S. taking the moral high road; let’s start treating all these other crap countries in the Middle East how they treat the U.S. – with the exception of Israel of course.
