‘Balloon Lagoon’ open at French Creek Nature Center

“The Boo-Loon Lagoon” at French Creek Nature Center in Sheffield is a family-friendly swamp walkthrough made entirely out of balloons by Sheila Kepic, a balloon artist from Sheffield Lake. It will be open to the public through Monday. The annual French Creek Trick-or-Treat Trail is 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

Amherst Public Library held Hobby and Activity Day on Saturday. More than 30 booths were featured, including displays for marbles, flint collecting, railroading, wood carvings, herbs and astronomy.

Thursday’s open house at the Wellness and Fitness Center at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain displayed the center’s new strength training and cardio equipment. The new equipment will be used with the medical center’s cardio and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. The center also will conduct general fitness center programs.

Construction is under way at BASF on a $50 million project to expand its site on Pine Street in Elyria. The BASF Battery Materials Plant, which is scheduled to go into production in 2012, “will play a key role in making lithium-ion batteries more available,” according to Frank Bozich, BASF’s president of its Catalysts Division.
