The family of Art Modell asked the Browns not to recognize him Sunday at the opener at Cleveland Browns Stadium, and the team agreed, a spokesman said.
Modell died Thursday at age 87. He owned the Browns from 1961-95 but is despised by many in Northeast Ohio after moving the team to Baltimore.
The Browns were worried about the fan reaction at the stadium but had decided to recognize Modell before the game vs. the Eagles. The NFL asked each home team this weekend to take a moment of silence or honor him in some way.
But the Modell family – sons David and John were at his side when he died – asked the Browns to refrain. Modell never returned to Cleveland after the move and the family likely didn’t want the negative reaction that was inevitable from at least some in the crowd.
