BEREA – The Browns continued training camp this afternoon with their second practice on another beautiful day.
Here are some highlights and notes:
** The defense got the better of the day, with several interceptions and pass breakups. Cornerback Joe Haden had what would’ve been an interception return for a touchdown, cornerback Trevin Wade collected a ball tipped by Jordan Norwood and Buster Skrine picked off a pass. All three quarterbacks, Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer and Jason Campbell, were victimized.
** Receiver David Nelson practiced for the first time with the Browns, but was limited to individual drills. Coach Rob Chudzinski hopes Nelson’s knee holds up and he’s able to add more work.
Nelson tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the opener last year for Buffalo. He signed with the Browns as a free agent. He was activated from PUP today.
** Defensive lineman Phil Taylor (calf strain), tight end Kellen Davis (knee sprain) and rookie offensive lineman Chris Faulk (knee surgery) worked with trainers on the side.
Chudzinski said he expects Taylor back soon, and Taylor looked good moving through the defensive line bags.
** Backup offensive tackle Oniel Cousins rolled an ankle and left the field.
** Receiver Josh Gordon was a full participant after leaving practice Thursday with a cramp.
** During stretching a fan yelled and asked who was glad former coach Pat Shurmur is gone. Running back Brandon Jackson, who was active for just two games last year, waved both hands.
** Rookie Jamoris Slaughter, a sixth-round pick, worked at free safety with the second team. He missed all of the offseason program as he recovered from a torn Achilles tendon.
** Chris Owens and Buster Skrine are splitting time at starting cornerback opposite Haden.
** The entire defense did pushups after a team drill in which a couple of interceptions were dropped.
** The Browns will wear pads for the first time today. Practice is 4-6:30 p.m.
