BEREA -- Browns cornerback Joe Haden has a sore foot and won’t play tonight in the third preseason game against the Rams.
He practiced this week and wasn’t on the injury report, but coach Mike Pettine decided to sit him for precautionary reasons. He’s considered day-to-day.
Potential starter Buster Skrine is also out following thumb surgery, so rookie Justin Gilbert, the No. 8 pick, and Leon McFadden are expected to start at cornerback. McFadden, a third-round pick last year, is fighting for a roster spot.
Veteran receiver Nate Burleson (hamstring) will miss his third straight game. He hasn’t practiced since Aug. 6, but said Thursday he planned to play as he tries to hang onto a roster spot.
Also inactive are: running back Edwin Baker (hamstring), cornerbacks Pierre Desir (knee), Isaiah Trufant (knee), T.J. Heath (hip) and K’Waun Williams (hamstring), linebackers Eric Martin (concussion), Darius Eubanks (shoulder) and Keith Pough (ankle), defensive lineman Desmond Bryant (wrist), tight end Martell Webb (groin) and offensive linemen Michael Bowie (shoulder), Randall Harris (knee) and Nick McDonald (wrist).
It’s the first home game of the season for Cleveland, so it’s the first chance for fans to see the first phase of the renovation of FirstEnergy Stadium. The highlights are new video boards in both end zones that are closer to the field.
Quarterback Brian Hoyer will start his third straight game of the preseason, but the first since being named the regular-season starter Wednesday. He’s 8-for-20 for 108 yards and looking to lead his first touchdown drive and develop a rhythm with the rest of the struggling first-team offense.
The starters are expected to play at least a half.
Rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel is expected to play most, if not all, of the second half.
