LORAIN – Police investigated an abandoned vehicle on Tuesday after the driver sped away from police, jumped out of the vehicle and ran away.
A Lorain County Sheriff’s deputy was on patrol in the area of Edgewood and Westwood drives at 2:05 a.m. Tuesday when the deputy spotted a driver in the intersection. The driver, who seemed to have noticed the deputy, sped away from the intersection, traveling less than 20 feet before bailing from the vehicle, according to a sheriff’s report.
The deputy reported that he did not activate his overhead lights, nor did he try to stop the driver.
The driver, who appeared to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was wearing a hooded sweatshirt. Police said he ran behind several houses and disappeared. The deputy did speak with a passenger in the vehicle, who said he was just “getting a ride” and only knew the driver as “Brian.” He was released from the scene, according to the report.
The deputy attempted to speak with the owner of the 2003 GMC Yukon, but no one at the owner’s home answered the door. The vehicle was registered to a woman who lived in the 5400 block of Edgewood Drive. Police have a suspect — a man with prior drug-related arrests.
