NORTH RIDGEVILLE — An alleged carjacking in Elyria ended with the suspect crashing the stolen car into another car at the intersection of Center Ridge and Lear-Nagle roads in North Ridgeville, police said.
Witness Debbie Jensch said she heard sirens as she was picking up her husband, Craig Jensch, a deliveryman at Hale’s Florist & Greenhouse, 33699 Center Ridge Road. She said she thought the siren was from an ambulance.
“I no sooner said, ‘It must be a bad accident,’ and you heard the loudest impact you ever want to hear,” she said.
Craig Jensch said it appeared that the stolen eastbound Ford Taurus collided with a westbound Buick Regal, spinning the Regal. He said a North Ridgeville police officer held the driver of the Taurus at gunpoint until he was removed from the car.
The 20-year-old man in the Taurus and the 36-year-old woman in the Regal both had non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized at St. John Medical Center in Westlake, according to North Ridgeville fire Capt. Paul Sadowski.
“It was a pretty good impact,” said Sadowski, who didn’t identify the man or woman. “Thank goodness for airbags.”
The crash slowed traffic to a crawl for about a quarter-mile on Center Ridge approaching the intersection. The intersection was cleared about 5:45 p.m.
The incident began outside an apartment at 333 Washington Ave., Elyria and was called in at 4:54 p.m., according to Elyria police spokesman Capt. Chris Costantino. A man told police he was moving out of his apartment and was loading his belongings into the Taurus. The man said a man brandishing a knife confronted him and stole the Taurus.
The Taurus was spotted at Center Ridge near the intersection of Race Road by North Ridgeville police Officer Brook Stewart, who chased it, according to North Ridgeville police Lt. Vince Abt.
He said the man, whom he didn’t identify, will face multiple charges and then be turned over to Elyria police, where he will face additional charges.
Reports on the incident were unavailable Wednesday night.
