Two elderly women transported by LifeFlight after Elyria crash

ELYRIA — Two women were badly hurt in a crash about 11:50 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of North Abbe Road and state Route 57.

A tractor-trailer truck hit a Toyota Highlander the women were in, police Capt. Phil Hammonds said. The southbound Highlander was turning left from Abbe onto Route 57 when it was hit on the passenger side by the eastbound Volvo tractor-trailer.

Highlander driver Joyce Kropf and passenger Sophie Vargo were hospitalized at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland Wednesday night. Kropf, 79, of Twinsburg, was in fair condition, according to a nursing supervisor. Vargo, 80, of Maple Heights, was critical.

Both Kropf and Vargo were conscious and alert after the crash, according to a fire department report. Vargo broke both wrists and her left ankle. Truck driver Glen Abidin, 61, of Westland, Mich., refused treatment.

A police report on the crash was unavailable Wednesday night.
