ELYRIA — Lorain County sheriff’s Sgt. Donald McCurry pleaded not guilty Thursday to felonious assault during his first court appearance in the case.
McCurry, 48, is accused of attacking Joe Reiger outside the McCurry family’s Island Road home in Eaton Township on Aug. 12, 2013.
Reiger has said he was visiting McCurry’s adult daughter, Ashley McCurry, in the early morning hours that day when the elder McCurry stopped in the area while on duty.
When McCurry saw him, Reiger has said, McCurry drew his gun on him, threatened to kill him and struck him in the head with a flashlight. After retreating outside, Reiger has said McCurry saw the bleeding injury to his head and asked family members to help him.
Ashley McCurry later took Reiger to the hospital, where he received 10 staples to close the wound.
McCurry, who took extended medical leave after he was charged following the nearly yearlong investigation by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, remains free on bond.
His attorney declined to comment.
