COLUMBIA STATION — Westlake continues being one of the top area boys golf teams and a threat to go far in the post-season tournaments.
The Demons won their third big tournament of the still-young season by capturing the Midview Invitational Tuesday with a 309 score at Columbia Hills Country Club.
Because school classes have begun the golfers didn’t tee off until 2 p.m., and just barely beat a rain shower at 7:30 when they all came in. Earlier tournaments started at 8 a.m.
Earlier in the season opener Westlake won the North Olmsted Invitational at Springvale Golf Club with a 301 score and later took the Ranger Invitational at Avon Oaks Country Club with 330.
The Demons were led by tourney medalist Jules Blakely’s two-over-par 73 while two teammates also shot in the 70s, Pat Steffen at 75 and Nick Wilson at 79.
Blakely was actually tied for actual low score with Olmsted Falls’ Alex Torres at 73 but was awarded top prize in a tie breaker (lowest second nine score). Blakely had a 36 on the back nine and Torres 38.
Torres was medalist at 69 at the North Olmsted Invitational and runner up at 77 at the Ranger Invitational.
Blakely got a big boost of confidence when he sank a 25-foot putt for par on the third hole (his actual second competitive hole after starting on the second in the shot gun start).
“That really gave me a boost,” Blakely said. “My approach shots were really working today. On seven holes I had shots at birdies after approaches landed within 10 feet of the pin.
“My best was on the 18th hole, my second to last, when I used a 50-degree wedge from 110 yards out to within a foot and a half from the hole for a tap-in birdie.”
The sophomore had four birdies for the round in getting his lowest 18-hole competitive round score of the season.
Torres had three birdies for his 73, on the second, sixth and eighteenth holes.
“My chipping and putting were really good today,” he said. “I had only 25 putts which is my lowest of the year. As for chipping
I chipped in a 20 yarder for a birdie on the sixth. I liked my drives today also.”
Westlake coach Brendan Zepp was beaming after the tourney. “We played pretty well. And my top three guys have been really consistent this year so far.
