ELYRIA — A 5-year-old Elyria girl had to be taken to the hospital yesterday after a playmate shot her in the eye with a BB gun.
Ashley Stevenson was treated and released from MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. She was transferred there from EMH Regional Medical Center.
According to a police report, the incident will not be treated as a criminal matter due to the age of the children. The child who shot Ashley is 6, the report said.
The 6-year-old, who became sick to her stomach while speaking with officers, told them she and Ashley were playing cops when she shot her in the eye, according to a police report.
Ashley's father told police neighborhood children let him know Ashley had been shot, and he grabbed her and rushed her to EMH.
The 6-year-old's parents told officers they did not realize the children were outside playing with the BB gun.
The BB gun was taken as evidence, the report said.
