Friday was the deadline for U.S. congressional candidates to file with county boards of elections, indicating their intention to run for office under the new map.
Lorain County may gain more conservative representation because the new map includes two Republican-leaning districts — the 4th and 7th — and one Democratic-leaning district, the 9th.
Previously, Lorain County’s two districts tended to lean Democratic.
The 4th District now includes Elyria, Sheffield, Amherst, Oberlin and Grafton and stretches in a claw-like shape through Sandusky County and into western Ohio.
James Slone, a Democrat, of Elyria, will run unopposed in the March 6 primary for the 4th District. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, will run on the Republican side and Chris Calla, a Libertarian from Lima, also has filed to run.
Slone, who retired from General Motors after 35 years and previously ran Jim’s Coffee House on Kerstetter Way, said he is afraid Lorain County won’t get fair representation under the new map.
“I think I can bring some common-sense government back to Lorain County from the federal government,” he said.
Vermilion, Lorain, Avon Lake and Sheffield Lake are included in the new 9th District, which stretches along the shores of Lake Erie from Lucas to Cuyahoga counties.
Three Democrats are running against one another in the 9th District — U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Cleveland, and Graham Veysey.
Republicans vying for the seat are Samuel Wurzelbacher, nationally known as “Joe the Plumber” and Steven Kraus. Sean Stipe is running as a Libertarian.
Two Republicans and two Democrats are running in the 7th District, which includes Avon, North Ridgeville, Wellington and the southern parts of Lorain County, and stretches down into Medina County and into Stark. U.S. Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Lakeville, is running against Hombre Liggett, of Dover. Joyce Healy-Abrams, of Canton, and Dawn Howard, of North Canton, are running as Democrats.
U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Copley Township, will challenge U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci, R-Wadsworth, in the 16th District, which includes Wayne County and parts of Cuyahoga, Medina, Summit, Stark and Portage counties.
