A former communications technician for the city of Elyria has been charged with theft and theft in office after more than $18,000 in city property was found at his home.
According to a news release from Elyria police, Nicholas L. Cerreto, 33, was arrested after a search at his LaGrange home Friday.
During a routine inventory by city of Elyria communications employees, it was discovered that 30 Whelen Cencom Sapphire Siren Systems valued at $625 each were missing from the communications department, the news release stated.
Cerrato worked in the department from 2007 through 2013, when he left "to pursue other career opportunities," the new release stated.
According to police, officers located the missing property at Cerreto's home and he later made admissions to detectives implicating himself in the theft.
The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
