LORAIN — Cuts at Lorain Schools’ Charleston Administration Center are expected to be completed within a month.
Superintendent Tom Tucker plans to discuss the plan, which involves about 25 positions, with staff today. About 13 staffers are moving from the center at 2350 Pole Ave. to schools distictwide. The rest of the cuts involve federal taxpayer-funded positions being eliminated and positions not being filled due to retirements.
The number of staff at the center and salaries of some of the administrators were resented by some residents and teachers during the tenure of former Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson, who left in 2011. The center was perceived as bloated in a district where enrollment has decreased from about 10,000 students to roughly 7,000 over the last decade, and dozens of teacher have been laid off because of deficits.
Tucker, who took over in August, made downsizing the center one of his top priorities.
“As I said, we were going to make it happen this year,” Tucker told Board of Education members at their Tuesday meeting.
Tucker said after the meeting that a chart of who is moving where will be completed in August. Some administrators are leaving to become assistant principals or principals. Roughly 30 people will work at the center when the school year begins in August compared with about 55 last August.
In other business:
Treasurer Dale Weber said finances in the district, which last year cut 182 positions in eliminating $7.3 million of a projected $12 million deficit, have improved. Passage of a levy in November and a $3 million loan helped eliminate much of the remainder of the deficit. Weber said the district finished the year with a $1.83 million surplus, which will be used to eliminate a projected $1.4 million deficit this year.
Chantelle Lewis, a former Cleveland Schools assistant principal, was named Larkmoor Elementary School principal, and Jeff Hawks was promoted from acting operations director to executive operations director.
Jim Burgett, a substitute teacher, asked board members to increase daily pay from $95 to $100. Burgett said pay hasn’t increased since he began substituting in the district in 2003. Burgett said the increase would make Lorain Schools more competitive with substitute pay in surrounding districts.
