NORTH RIDGEVILLE — A 49-year-old city man died in a car crash around 7:50 p.m. Monday on the front lawn of a home at 5499 Avon-Belden Road.
Police would not identify the man late Monday, but Dr. Stephen Evans, Lorain County coroner, said the man was from North Ridgeville. Evans said the man died shortly after the crash from blunt force trauma that may have included a broken neck. He said police found the man partially outside the four-door Kia sport utility vehicle, which landed on its roof, and he may not have been wearing a seat belt.
Next-door neighbor Angela Jenne, 28, of 5487 Avon-Belden Road, said she had just taken out trash to the garage and was about to tend to her 1-year-old daughter when she heard tires screeching. Jenne said the northbound car veered right, crashed into two trees and flipped on its roof. The car landed about 15 yards from the front of the home.
The man was alone in the Kia, according to a news release from Lt. Vince Abt who couldn’t be reached for comment late Monday. He said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The crash occurred between Atlantic and Dorchester avenues on Avon-Belden Road, state Route 83. Police blocked off Route 83 and U.S. Route 20, about 1.3 miles from the crash site, for at least two hours after the crash, but allowed neighbors to drive through. The Mills Road intersection about a half-mile from the crash also was blocked.
Neighbor Robert Hilko, of 5425 Avon-Belden Road, said the crash was the third in about a year on the road near his home and the first fatal crash. He said many cars disobey the 45 mph speed limit on the two-lane road and make risky passes of slower cars.
