ELYRIA — Three members of Lorain County who have chosen to serve their communities in different ways — through elected office, journalism and establishing a far-reaching food pantry — were honored Saturday at the 59th annual Elyria branch of the NAACP Freedom Fund Gala at Lorain County Community College.
The affair was a moment to honor not just the continuing efforts of the local organization but also the efforts of the honorees:
- Lorain City Councilman Tim Howard
- Roxanne Jones Lewis
- The director of Out Reach Ministry at Asbury United Methodist Church
- Lisa Roberson, city government reporter at The Chronicle-Telegram.
Each received the 2013 Community Service Award.
Howard was recognized for his efforts in elected office, as well as his work with Lorain County Community Action Agency, Lorain Lions Club, One Hundred Men of Lorain County and Mercy Regional Medical Center’s Diversity Board, to name a few. He is a lifelong Lorain resident and is employed by Lorain County Community College.
Lewis began her work with the food pantry in 2007, and since then the food pantry has grown to serve more than 200 families each month and serve as a foundation for volunteerism on the south side of Elyria.
Roberson has been covering Elyria city government as well as education issues since 2006. She has won several awards for her writing, including best news writer, best staff writer in the state and most recently best minority reporting.
Other honorees of the night included Glen Ewing III, Isaiah Nelson and Markia Boone, all were 2013 Student Award recipients.
State Sen. Nina Turner, representing the 25th district, served as the keynote speaker. Turner delivered a passionate speech imploring audience members to keep up the fight to ensure all Americans have equal access to the ballot box, a fitting theme as this is the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s march on Washington, D.C.
