CAMDEN TWP. — A man thrown from a motorcycle had to have his left leg amputated below the knee after he collided with a car at the intersection of state routes 18 and 511 about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Robert Howard, 49, of Canton, was listed in fair condition Sunday at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to a nursing supervisor.
Sgt. Tim Hoffman, Ohio Highway Patrol Elyria post assistant commander, said he spoke Sunday with Howard’s mother, who told him about the amputation.
Police said Howard was eastbound on Route 18 when he improperly passed a car on the right side and struck a Ford Escape turning left onto Route 511. A woman and two children in the Escape received minor injuries.
A report on the crash was unavailable Sunday, but Hoffman said witnesses said Howard was riding recklessly before the crash. He said police haven’t interviewed Howard yet. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
