Thelma Spitzer Gibbs, 82, of Elyria, died Sunday, August 5, 2007 at Life Care Center of Elyria. She was born November 19, 1924 in Elyria and had been a life long Lorain County resident.
She was honored in 2001 by being inducted into the EMH Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Volunteer Hall of Fame in recognition of her over 14,000 hours of volunteer service.
Mrs. Gibbs was a graduate of Eaton High School and Kent State University and was an elementary teacher at East Carlisle School for 22 years.
She was a 50 year member of First United Methodist Church, Elyria. She was also a member of Elyria Country Club, Stone City Chapter No. 325, Order of Eastern Star, Elyria Woman's Club, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Elyria Senior Women's Fellowship, Lorain County Retired Teacher's Association, Ohio Education Association and AARP. She served for many years as a poll worker for the Lorain County Board of Elections.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling which included a trip around the world and visiting all 50 states.
Survivors include her daughters, Cheryl (Neal) Hubbard of Elyria and Georgia (Donald) Awig of Olmsted Twp.; a son, Garry (Barbara) Gibbs an Elyria City Councilman; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Helen (Richard) Walkden of Columbia Station.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley in 1989; parents, Roe and Gertrude (nee Shumway) Spitzer and a brother, Charles Spitzer.
Visitation will be Friday 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria.
A funeral service will be Saturday 10 A.M. at First United Methodist Church, Elyria. Rev. Dalton Love will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
