Mabel Josephine Ledyard (nee Thompson), 91, of Elyria, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2013, in Strongsville, after a long illness. Born in Astoria, Oregon, August 19, 1921, she was a 1939 graduate of Astoria High School.
After graduating, Mabel worked for Columbia River Packers Association, cleaning and packing tuna and salmon. She worked for three years at JC Penney's in Astoria, as a clerk and window decorator, and later at JC Penney's in Oakland, California, and on Broad St. in Elyria for several years.
Mabel was a resident of Elyria since March, 1946. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Astoria, and Grace Lutheran Church in Elyria, where she served on the Altar Guild for six years.
She was a life member of the VFW Post #1079 Auxiliary, where she served as Jr. Vice Guard, Trustee, Secretary and Treasurer for 10 years. She had been a member of The Daughters of Norway in Astoria for over 60 years and a member of the Ohio Norsemen since 1994.
She was a gifted sketch artist, and enjoyed dancing and traveling with her husband, Cliff throughout their marriage. A truly patriotic couple, Mabel and Cliff met at a USO dance during World War II in Astoria, where he tripped over her feet, so he asked her to dance, and the rest is history! Mabel enjoyed her first motorcycle ride at age 90, all the while grinning from ear to ear.
She is survived by her son, Allen Ledyard, of Elyria; two daughters, Judy Ledyard Buenconsejo (Allan) of Brentwood, California, and Janice Kasper (Bill) of Strongsville; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Clifford; brothers, Kristian, Peder, and Allen Thompson; and by her parents ,Hans and Jette Thompson (Nee Sather).
Friends will be received in the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria, Tuesday, January 15, 2013, from 4 P.M. until the time of funeral services at 7 P.M. The Reverend Robert Weldon Sr., Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Oregon.
