Melvin J. Licking, 92, of North Ridgeville, passed away Monday, February 10, 2014, at New Life Hospice Residential Center, Lorain, following a short illness. He was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania and was raised there until 1938, moving to Salem New Jersey, where he graduated from Salem High School in 1939. He resided North Ridgeville since 1968 after moving from Elyria, where he lived for over 23 years.
Mr. Licking earned the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corp during a World War II, serving in Europe. He was employed by Bendix-Westinghouse, where he met his future wife, Marie Castle. He later became a Cleveland District Sales Manager for Riddle Airlines before working for Rapid Air Freight in cargo container and loading for Ford Motor Company and General Motors, retiring in 1988 as Director of Operations. Melvin was a life member of the VFW Post 9522 and the American Legion Post 12. He was an avid golfer and had recorded two eagles and a hole-in-one, having played in St. Peter Golf League for many years.
He is survived by his daughter, Carol (Don) DiDomenico of North Ridgeville; son, Tom (Ruth) Licking of Lorain; three grandchildren, Mila (Dan) Reaser, Donald J. (fiancee Jennifer Corrai) DiDomenico, Lori DiDomenico; and three great-grandchildren, Danny, Danielle and Shannon.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie in March 2003; great-granddaughter, Erin Reaser,; mother, Catherine Stephens; and stepfather, James Stephens.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 12, 2014, from 6 to 8 P.M., at Bogner Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville, where prayer services will be held 9:30 A.M., Thursday, February 13, 2014, followed by a 10 A.M. Mass, at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church. Reverend Gerald Keller will be the Celebrant. Private burial will take place later in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township
