He served as a member of the United State Marine Corps (1946-48) and the United States Air Force (1950-52). He taught Industrial Engineering Technology at Lorain County Community College from 1962 until he retired in 1991. He was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Knights of Columbus.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Carol M. Smith (nee Fenstermaker), whom he married August 21, 1954 at St. Mary's Parish in Chardon. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Paul; his sister-in-law, Julie; and his brother-in-law, Bill.
He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Jackson; his children, Margaret (Gregory) Griffith, Michael (Gesilda), Robert (Laura), Susan, William (Natalia), Kathleen (Carl) Kohr, and Martin; grandchildren, Sarah Mravec, Amanda (John) Wheeler, Kimberly, Phillip, Hannah Kohr, Joanna (Randy) Hinzman, Elizabeth Kohr, Joseph, Emma Griffith, Molly, Madeline Kohr, Alexandria, Amelia Kohr, Andria; and great-grandchildren, Abigail Wheeler, Harlow Hinzman, Adeline Hinzman, and Marshal Wheeler. He was also preceded in death by his good friends, Bill Halbach and Jim Cosgrove.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M., at Paine Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell, Ohio. A Funeral Mass, presided by the Reverend John Madden, will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church, 3049 State Route 45, Rock Creek, Ohio 44084. Burial will take place at the Rock Creek Union Cemetery, with Military Honors.
