WELLINGTON — The area’s newest softball powerhouse rolled into town on Sunday, waxed its first OGSO district tournament opponent and left for home with its 18th victory of the season.
North Ridgeville’s undefeated Lady Rangers routed Keystone E.H. Roberts, 20-0, to qualify for a Class B district championship game at 6 p.m. Tuesday. They advanced on the strength of Kailey DeMarco’s 10-strikeout no-hitter and an offensive attack that saw three players rip three hits each and four others two apiece.
The Rangers, who drew a first-round bye, will face the Medina Magic with a berth in the state tournament hanging in the balance. The Magic blanked Columbia, 5-0. Class B is for players 11-12.
In other Class B action, the Keystone Kats blanked Columbia, 7-0, to advance against Spencer in an 8:30 Tuesday bracket final. Spencer mercy-ruled Wellington 15-0. And Midview North shellacked Henrietta 14-2 to qualify for the third Class B bracket final Tuesday at 6 against the Medina Heat. The Heat nipped Keystone 11-10.
Columbia, with a 10-0 rout of Grafton, will face Keystone in a Class A (age 9-10) bracket final at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Keystone won by forfeit over Spencer. North Ridgeville, which nipped Cloverleaf, 10-7, on Sunday will meet the winner of tonight’s Wellington-Henrietta game in Tuesday’s other 6 p.m. title game.
Play in Class C (age 13-14) opens tonight with three games each at 6 and 8:30. All Class D (15-18) games will be played on Saturday at Community Park.
Kylie Dawson drilled two singles and a double and Ashley Helmink three singles to lead Ridgeville’s Lady Rangers. Marissa Coraballo, Jenna Yost, DeMarco and Rylee Kubisen all hit two singles and Katelyn Mohler also contributed a hit. Keystone had scored 28 runs in a rout of Belden on Saturday.
Keystone’s Caitlyn Minney fired an 18-strikeout one-hitter in the Kats’ defeat of Columbia. Minney also hit two singles and Jaycie Brown blasted a triple for Keystone. Dagmar Smith and Kayla Finkel combined on a ho-hitter in Spencer’s mercy-rule thumping of Wellington. Spencer’s Hannah Messenger hit two singles and a double and Finkel added a single and double.
Megan Wade tossed a nine-strikeout three-hitter in Midview’s 14-2 win over Firelands. She got offensive help from Kate Thomas, who hit two singles and a double; Kim Stone’s single and double and Amanda Beursken’s two singles. The Medina Heat nipped Keystone 11-10 despite Jenna Quillen’s two singles.
Wellington Lance Interiors outlasted Oberlin, 14-10, as Summer Constable hit two singles and Logan Simmons pitched a 13-strikeout four-hitter. Reyna LaRiccia had two singles and struck out seven for Oberlin.
Annamarie Long hit two singles and Nicole Andrews struck out 13 in North Ridgeville’s 10-7 win over Cloverleaf. Kristen Bousher hit a single and double and Nichole Jenny, Kailey Minarchick and Shelby Friedel all hit two singles in Columbia’s 10-0 rout of Grafton. Minarchick notched 14 strikeouts.
