LORAIN — The resurrection of the Admiral King football program continued Saturday night as the Admirals downed visiting Trinity 33-19 in non-conference action.
The win was the fourth straight for the Admirals as they closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 4-1 record.
“It wasn’t our best game,” said Admiral King coach Mark Campo. “We were sloppy in the first half, made some mental mistakes defensively and had too many penalties to stop our drives offensively. We finally put some things together to get enough points to win the game.
“But we can’t make those types of mistakes and be the kind of football team that we want to be.”
Admiral King trailed 7-0 following a Joe Moran 30-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, the Admirals mishandled the ball and it was recovered by the Trojans’ Alex Ferfolia at the Admiral King 35.
Six plays later, Moran punched it in from 2 yards out. The extra-point try was wide and Admiral King found itself down 13-0 with 3:17 left in the opening quarter.
“We put ourselves in a hole early,” Campo said. “But the kids believe in themselves and have the confidence to overcome things like that. So they came out and went right back work to erase the deficit.”
It didn’t take long.
On the fourth play of the ensuing drive, quarterback Terrence Atkinson hit running back Chris Kimbro across the middle and the junior broke three tackles before running down the sideline for a 67-yard catch-and-run touchdown.
“They don’t throw to me often,” Kimbro said. “I’m more of a blocker than a receiver. So when it does come my way, I try to take advantage of the opportunity and score.”
Opportunistic could be used to describe the Admirals’ second touchdown.
Marching down the field on its ensuing possession, Trinity elected to go for it on fourth-and-17 from the Admiral King 34 and senior Matt Toth them pay.
Toth picked off Trinity quarterback Ryan Adams at the 20-yard line and burst down the sideline 80 yards and into the end zone for the score. A Cameron Szatala extra-point tied the score at 13 with 8:07 left in the half.
“My big assignment this week was to watch the tight end,” Toth said. “Trinity likes to run a seam route with him. I saw that he released clean and once the quarterback pulled back and threw, I knew I had it.
“I just caught it and headed straight for the ‘zone.’”
Following another stalled Trinity possession, Admiral King added to its lead with Kimbro’s second touchdown of the game, this one from 6 yards out, for a 20-13 halftime lead.
Trinity pulled to within 20-19 on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Adams to Chris Neiger on the opening possession of the second half. But that’s as close as they would get.
A Cameron Bryant 1-yard touchdown run on the ensuing possession upped the Admiral King lead to 27-19. From there, the Admiral King defense stepped up, limiting Trinity to four consecutive possessions of four downs and out.
Admiral King’s final score came on a 1-yard run from Tim Taylor with 1:28 left to play.
“This is a big win for us,” Toth said. “We’re starting conference play now and so none of the games are going to be easy. We can’t have any mistakes from here on out if we want to come out on top when it’s all said and done.”
