Avon Lake's Andrea Nicholson to play softball for Grand Valley State

It wasn`t an easy journey, but softball player Andrea Nicholson of Avon Lake appeared satisfied Division II Grand Valley State was the right fit to continue her athletics career.

"I like the school`s academics and I like the coach," said Nicholson. "He looks at the character of the athletes and I like playing with good people."

Last year, Nicholson had an 18-3 won-lost record pitching for the Shoregals. She had 275 strikeouts and only 18 walks in 147 innings with a 0.57 earned-run average. Nicholson also tossed a perfect game against Midpark, ringing up 18 strikeouts.

The 2007 Southwestern Conference Player-of-the-Year was first team all-county, all-district and was an All-Ohio selection. For her career, she is 39-20 overall with 602 strikeouts and 56 walks with an 0.82 earned-run average.

Nicholson, who has a 4.08 grade-point average, is a member of National Society and Varsity Club. She plans to major in pre-med at Grand Valley, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Last year, Grand Valley State finished 36-18 overall and 12-6 in the conference. The Lakers tallied the fourth highest GPA in Division II during the 2006-07 academic year with a 3.507. GVSU is led by 17th-year head coach Doug Woods.
