WELLINGTON — The week’s seemingly endless rains didn’t throw the OGSO’s U14 Class C tournament off schedule.
A dozen teams squared off Lorain-Medina District semifinals Thursday night under the lights at Community Park. Six advanced to tonight’s finals with the winners earning trips to next weekend’s state tournament in Champion, Trumbull County.
In games rescheduled because of heavy rain earlier in the week, two U12 Class B squads advanced to district finals Monday night at North Ridgeville’s Palmer Field. Those winners also advance to next week’s action in Champion.
Tonight’s Class C finals find Wellington, a 15-5 winner over Spencer, taking on South Amherst; Buckeye Johnson, a 14-13 extra-inning winner over the Columbia Raiders, tackling Lorain Cruz; the Columbia Crushers meeting Keystone Halleen Kia, and Sheffield tangling with Amherst.
Lorain Cruz routed Keystone 19-1, Columbia Crushers scored a 7-0 forfeit win over Midview and Sheffield mercy-ruled Buckeye Calame, 10-0.
Wellington routed Sheffield Wild 15-2 in one of the Class B semifinals. In the other, Amherst Lightning held an apparently insurmountable 29-6 lead over North Ridgeville DQs in a late-running game. Two other Class B semis are scheduled for tonight in North Ridgeville.
Salena Shawver tripled and Summer Metcalf hit a double in Sheffield’s 10-0 win over Buckeye Calame. Shawver pitched a four-strikeout one-hitter, the sole hit a single by Buckeye’s Tori Gezumalla.
Sydney Campbell and Nautica Barber combined on a two-hitter in Keystone Halleen’s 9-1 win over the Lorain Xplosion, Campbell struck out nine, Barber fanned three and neither pitcher issued a walk. Shelby Fortune doubled for Keystone.
Kat Lorinz’s three singles led Wellington to its 15-5 rout of Spencer. Sydnie Jarrett and Kaitlyn Krish each hit a pair of singles for Spencer. In an
extra-inning thriller, the Columbia Raiders took a 5-0 first-inning lead over Buckeye Johnson. But Buckeye mounted a late comeback and went on to a 14-13 victory in eight innings.
Haven Weatherbee, Kayleigh Diller and Brooklyn Damiano all hit two singles and a double in Wellington’s 15-2 route of the Sheffield Wild. Hailey Buzaleski hurled a four-hitter and struck out three. And Amherst Lightning led North Ridgeville DQs, 29-6, in the fifth inning of a late-running Class B matchup.
