WELLINGTON — The undefeated Class C Amherst Vipers rolled to their 13th straight victory Friday night and into the OGSO state tournament next weekend in Champion, near Warren.
Three other U14 teams also advanced to the state level after earning Lorain-Medina district titles at Wellington Community Park. Moving on are South Amherst, a 9-1 victor over Wellington; Lorain Cruz, which mercy-ruled Buckeye Johnson 17-2; and Keystone Halleen Kia, an 11-1 mercy-rule winner over the Columbia Crushers.
The Vipers beat Sheffield 10-0.
In an earlier Class A (U10) semifinal, Wellington rolled over South Amherst 19-3.
Two Class D (16-and-over) teams will advance to state semifinals July 20, 21 and 27. One semifinal game — Wellington vs. Buckeye — is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sunday at LaGrange Community Park. Other semifinals will be played at 6:30 Monday at the LaGrange Park, and the two district champions will be crowned after games Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Amanda Arendt, a former Amherst star shortstop and catcher, manages Sliman’s Vipers. She said her team is young and that only one of her players is 14.
“The rest of them could all be playing 12U right now,” Arendt said. “Talent-wise, they all contribute something. Right now, the girls are starting to find their roles. They’re starting to come together and play together as a team. They look to their leaders and the team dynamic is really starting to come together.
“They’re really buying into the philosophy that all the coaches are preaching to them,” said Arendt, who plays at Notre Dame College of Ohio. “My philosophy is if you come to the field with a good attitude, everything is going to fall into place. If you have a good attitude, you’re going to play with heart and passion.”
Kelsey Gonos, Lauren Evans and Aliyha Cruz all had three singles in Lorain Cruz’s relatively easy victory over Buckeye Johnson. Olivia Madera hit two singles and a triple, Evelyn Williams and Gabby Anadar each hit two singles and Arianna Cruz had a single and double.
The Amherst Vipers got two doubles from Lauren Kachure and two singles each by Amanda Crisler and Kate Iliff in their 10-0 win over Sheffield. Crisler struck out 12 and walked one in hurling a three-hitter. Sheffield’s Summer Metcalf hit two singles.
South Amherst got two doubles and a triple from Megan Weller, Hannah Reynolds and Olivia Harris each hit two singles and a double and Hailey Blankenship and Kennedy Shreve each doubled for South Amherst. Wellington’s Amber Wetherbee hit two singles and a double.
And Keystone Halleen Kia pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth inning to run-rule the Columbia Crushers. Nautica Barber, Lexi Gunter and Brooke Piazza all had two singles. Keystone’s Sydney Campbell pitched a two-hitter.
Kendal Brasee hit a double and triple, Kaitlyn Diller put up two singles and Teddi Hardoby and Ally Zvara also doubled in Wellington’s 19-3 rout of South Amherst. Zvara, with five strikeouts, and Haleigh Polen, with six K’s, combined for a three-hitter. Madison Pennington had two of South Amherst’s three hits, both singles.
