VERMILION --Lorain County was dealt a double whammy Friday with the announcement that the Inland Seas Museum won't move to Lorain as planned and instead will relocate from Vermilion to Toledo.
Toledo Lucas County Port Authority and Boyer/Riverfront Inc. have entered into a memorandum of understanding that should result in the signing of a lease for the new property within the next few months.
The Toledo Maritime Center Building on the Maumee River in Toledo will be the museum's new home. The museum will be renamed the National Great Lakes Maritime Museum.
Museum officials opted for Toledo over Lorain, which it initially had pledged to move to, after studies showed population density and tourism numbers wouldn't support it in Lorain.
The existing museum property in Vermilion will be sold, and the museum is working toward a goal to keep it a public use facility. It should close by 2011.
