NEW RUSSIA TWP. — Three people were LifeFlighted from the scene of a rollover accident overnight, according to the State Highway Patrol.
Driver Maurice Newell, 27, of Elyria, was eastbound on Hamilton Street at 3:09 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, Trooper Lance Deshuk said.
Deshuk said the rental car Newell was driving, a 2012 Nissan Altima, ran off right side road, struck a street sign, went through a fence, went airborne through culvert and overturned. The vehicle ended up right-side up along the westbound lanes of U.S. Route 20 with heavy damage, he said.
Passenger Melissa Stowers, 31, of Vermilion was ejected, and passenger Keeon Green, 29, of Elyria was also injured.
Newell and Green had both been discharged from MetroHealth Medical Center this afternoon. Stowers remained there but had not yet been assigned a condition, according to a spokeswoman.
Deshuk said the accident remains under investigation. He said there was no indication at the scene that any outside factor, such as other vehicles or weather, played a role in the crash. He also wouldn't speculate whether alcohol or drugs could have been a factor.
